ABOUT: THE ABOVEGROUND-UNDERGROUND
The building, a single-story, 2800 square foot concrete block structure, carries a nickname that perfectly encapsulates its essence: The Aboveground-Underground. From the street, it maintains a deceptively vacant appearance, its faded, dark green 1948 paint scheme, cracked plaster, and exposed block hinting at a long-forgotten past. Yet, for those in the know, this unassuming facade conceals a vibrant, pulsating hub of musical activity.
Today, The Aboveground-Underground is a dynamic space dedicated to the meticulous craft and passionate performance of music. A significant portion of its raw, industrial interior has been repurposed into a specialized workshop, where the skilled hands of artisans bring musical instruments back to life.
But the true heart of this unique facility beats within its spacious 24 x 36 foot "improv" jam room. This isn't merely a practice space; it's a creative sanctuary, fully equipped with professional audio and video recording capabilities. Here, on Monday evenings, a select group of talented local musicians gather for their collective improvisational jam session. With quality audio equipment capturing it all, just in case something magical happens. Adjacent to this energetic space lies a dedicated isolation room, a quiet haven designed for recording individual tracks, ensuring every subtle detail of a performance may be perfectly preserved. It's a rare privilege for friends and friends of friends to join these sessions, to contribute to the rich tapestry of sound, and to leave with broadcast quality audio and video demo recordings of their shared musical endeavors.
The building's current life as a musical haven is a stark contrast to its origins. It was constructed in 1948 as The House of Reagin, a bustling drapery production facility. Back then, its front display windows and customer receiving area occupied the front third of the building, while the remainder of the space was dedicated to the intricate process of drapery production. Even now, the deteriorated, yet still iconic, vintage neon sign from its drapery days remains mounted on the front, a silent, glowing testament to its storied past, adding another layer to the mystique of The Aboveground-Underground.
